Chain Reaction 3.1.16: Obsession

Darrin sees me through the front door window. I decide to go ahead and let him in.

He looks scared. "Are you okay? Have you noticed anything suspicious? Anyone hanging around your house that shouldn't be there?"
Other than you? "No, I haven't."
"You didn't see anyone sneaking around your house this evening?"
"No. I was... busy." And it's none of your business. "What's going on, Darrin?"
"An inmate told a guard who told the department. Drake Goth has hired a hitman."
     I'm fully awake now.

     "Are you sure?"
"There's always the possibility that it's false information, but I don't want to take any chances. With your permission, I'd like to do a search of the perimeter."
     "Ye-yeah. Go ahead."
"Thanks." He pulls out a flashlight and gun from somewhere, checks the clip, and walks out the front door into the night.
Holy sh*t! I knew Drake hated me, and I realized the possibility that he'd seek revenge. But I guess I got too comfortable. Now, Darrin is out there risking his life for me.
I don't hear anything, so I go have a seat on one of my little couches. After an eternity, Darrin lets himself in and has a seat on the other one. I relax a little bit now that I know he's okay.

"Well?" This is the first time Darrin's been to... well, inside... my house. It's strange. And I don't want to think about how much I like it.
"I didn't see anyone." He looks relaxed--just a little. "But... I did find some suspicious footprints."
"What should I do?" Get on my knees in front of you and...
Plum, Mike. Stop! I really hope he didn't just read my expression.
He lets out a slow breath. "I'd like to... hang around for a while, for the night... Just to keep watch!" He rubs his palms downward on his pants a few times--like he's nervous.
"You want to be my bodyguard." It's more of a statement.
He swallows. "Sort of. Yeah. While I'm off-duty. For your protection."
I do a kind of shrug for hands. "I guess I don't have a problem with it, but..." I look around.
Understanding, he says, "I'll sleep on the couch."
"These are terrible couches to sleep on, Darrin." What am I doing? Inviting him into my bedroom?
"It beats sleeping on the floor. I'll be fine." He asks where my bathroom is, and I tell him.
When he comes out, I see he's removed his tie, suspenders, and shoes. He stashes everything, including the gun, under the couch, the gun being easily accessible. We say our goodnights, and I go back to my room.
Damn him. It's hard to go back to my Ivy fantasy with Darrin mere feet away in the next room. What would he have done if I'd been successful in getting Ivy to my house tonight? My mind travels down that avenue until I have to use the restroom.

     And there he is.
He starts for a second, and his hand immediately goes for under the couch. Then he sees it's me, relaxes, and goes back to a sleep-like state.
He's here--personally--to protect me. He's really scared. My heart aches at all the implications.
Will I ever get over him?
I go use the restroom and come back. I can't help but look at him. I want to look at him. I've missed looking at him.

He whines, "Miiiiiike, go back to sleep."
I smile. "I'm normally awake at night lately."
All I get is a mumbled reply, and he tries to get comfortable again.
He misses me too. He said so. He's here. He's scared I'm in danger. Well, I am if what he said is true. And he doesn't want to leave me.
He still loves me. The thought just sits there in the semi-darkness like it was waiting to be found. After all, he never said he didn't. I, in fact, have been the only one to utter the opposite. And it was because I was deeply hurt.
I imagine what would happen if I went over and kissed him right now. He'd probably say no. Then he'd push me away. Then he'd lean forward and kiss me. Then it would be wonderful for an unknown number of moments. Then he'd remind me how he doesn't want to get back together. And I would be crushed again.
So it's kiss him and get crushed or do nothing and have everything stay the same. I don't want either. I just want him.
Well, I'm not drunk this time, so I have no excuse for bad decisions.
I get up and go back to bed. I sleep for a few hours before getting up again.

And I find Darren sitting at my table in his socks. He's helped himself to some leftovers. I don't mind one bit.

He looks guilty when I sit down. "Sorry. I hope you don't mind me helping myself."
     I smile. "Not at all."
He sighs, looking exhausted. "I have to go to work."
"I know." I offer another small smile when he looks up. Yes, silly, I still remember your work schedule.
"I'm... I'm nervous, Mike. I'm going to send someone by to... to watch the house. So, uh, don't flip out if you see a black and white sitting on the street near here all day." He means a squad car.
"Okay." I wait to see if he says more. He doesn't. "I don't really have any plans to leave. I'm just going to sleep some more and then get up and do some work." I'm talking about stuff for Aunt Em.
He smiles just a little. "I really like your videos."

That shocked me. "You what? You watch my videos?"
Bigger smile. "Yeah. Why wouldn't I?"
Darrin, stop it! I've more than once indirectly mentioned him--just calling him my ex. Sometimes directly with the friend bits. I was never specific about him, protecting his identity. Now he knows close to exactly what I was thinking during certain parts of our relationship. I, of course, made it funny by making myself look like a goofball, but the fact that Darrin himself knows...
I don't know if I'll be able to be as honest as I was before. I cover my face. "I wasn't expecting you to watch them."
"Why? They were easy to find. And you did an amazing job keeping me unidentifiable."
Plum. He KNOWS it was about him. Just hide me under the floorboards for a while.
Through my fingers, I see him smiling as he gets up to wash his bowl. Then he goes to the restroom to get ready for work. After that, he stands near the door and asks me to be safe and that he'll see me later.
"Okay." I'm mortified. My smile, sometimes, looked obviously fake in the earlier videos.
I know I put that stuff out there for people to see, but I didn't expect Darrin to be even interested in watching it.
Needing to rewatch them, I dash to the basement.

To the untrained eye, everything looks the silly kind of normal, but Darrin has the inside scoop, the ability to read between the lines.
Wait a minute... 'Easy to find'?!
Easy to find. Easy to find... I sit back in my chair and put my hand over my mouth.
Easy to find as in he was searching me up on the internet. Cyberstalking. That's how he got my address after all. He may have even used the police database to get it.
So he dumps me and then does searches for me? He watches my videos? He's driven by my house a few times? ...maybe more than a few.
But he acted surprised by my hair. Well, I usually don't tie it back on the videos like I do when I'm working out.
But still! Why else would he cyberstalk me if he didn't have some kind of obsession?
He really meant it when he said he missed me. I bang my fist against the desk. Damn him!
I go over to my other computer and force myself to do work for a while. I can't think about my earlier realization or I'll lose my mind in 'what if'-land.

Later, I do some yoga. I'm desperate to find inner balance. Darrin has me so off-kilter that I'll go mad if I think too much about it. So I focus on breathing for a good half hour.
When I'm finished, I feel better.
     But that doesn't last.

Darrin knocks once then lets himself in. "I hate my parents."
My voice is nonplussed. "Hi, Darrin. Come on in."

"They keep inviting random women over to dinner in an effort to set me up with one of them." Ow. If I consider Ivy, my jealousy isn't fair. But I can't help it. "Tonight it was a redhead. A schoolteacher. A kindergarten teacher. She had the most annoying voice! It was like even though she was talking to adults, she couldn't turn off the 'teacher voice' she probably uses." He sighs and opens his eyes. "I had to get out." He finally sees my expression. "Um... Could I... stay here again tonight?"
"Fine," I reply before passing him and going down the stairs.
     He follows me.

Now I have the impossible job of trying to get some work done. At least he doesn't try to get me in a conversation.
He just wants to be near me.
Then he should plumbing get over his hangups about our relationship! You can't stalk someone you know loves you then say you can't be together. I think Darrin is possibly hurting worse from the breakup than even I am.
Well, he did it to himself.
My phone buzzes. Ivy. Good. I answer quietly and then creep up the stairs.

I'm still on the phone, and Darrin comes rushing upstairs in a panic.
"I'll call you back." She says that's okay, and I hang up. I turn to my ex-boyfriend. "What?"
"You disappeared. I didn't mean to sleep that deeply."
I roll my eyes before going to my room and slamming the door.

The following morning, my morning-time that is, something smells delicious.

Darrin made breakfast. And he'd packed pajamas. Pants only. And he looks as delicious as the food smells.
     And this has to stop.

Chain Reaction 3.1.15: Confidence

I'm going to dinner with Ivy tonight. I don't know if it's an actual date, but I'm going to get ready like it is. Maybe we can discuss whether or not it is over dinner. I have butterflies. That's a good sign, right? It means there's a possibility that I could develop feelings for someone else.

Because I simply have to get over Darrin. The other night at the club brought me three steps backwards. It's like we broke up days ago instead of months ago. It hurts! It hurts all over again.

I finish getting ready for the maybe-date and get to the restaurant. I'm relieved she doesn't stand me up.

I'm wearing something new. I wonder if she realizes she's wearing the same outfit she wore at the bar. Not that I mind. She still looks great.
Darrin looked great at the club... Stop it! Maybe someday I'll be able to control my thoughts.

After we order, we sit here quietly. Who's supposed to start the conversation? Me? I've never had to wonder about these things before.
Plum. "You look great tonight." That's what people say, right?
She smiles sheepishly. "Thanks. Yeah, I realized after I left the house that I'm wearing the same thing I wore to the bar."
"Well, we all have our favorite outfits."
"Exactly! Thank you!" She really looks at me for the first time. "Is that new?" The shirt still has that extra-crisp look. That may be the reason she can tell. That, or she's also just trying to make conversation.

I smile, relaxing just a bit more. "Yeah. I figured why not. It's been a while since I've been to dinner with someone." Hint. Please tell me in some way if this is a date or not.
Oh well. On some small level, it doesn't matter. The fact is that I'm having dinner with a pretty girl, something the me-before-Darrin only dreamed about. Even if it's not a date, maybe I can charm my way into one. Somehow.
"So I've been thinking about what we could do with the collab." Okay. I guess she wants to get right into it.
      "Great! What are your ideas?"

"Well, you know my show centers around things that drive people crazy... in various ways."
"Yeah?" Is she going to blindfold me and torture me sexually? She has pushed the envelope, if only in mind games, before.
"Okay, so your show is based upon you answering five random questions put forth by your viewers." She pauses. "By the way, how do you choose the questions?"

"That's pretty easy to guess. I have to make it funny, so I think about how I'd answer and choose the best ones."
"Because I've read the comment section a few times, and some of those questions get really... personal. Then you've surprised me by answering them. Of course, the answer was hilarious. You really have no trouble at all making yourself look and act ridiculous. I think that alone is your ticket to success."
"So what were your thoughts?" Because I just got an idea if she didn't. Honestly, I hadn't been able to think of one yet. I've been too distracted with... other things. Ugh.
"What if I promo'ed a future episode and asked my viewers to come up with questions?"
My mouth drops. "I was thinking the same thing! Except your viewers make me... nervous."
Our food arrives while she giggles at what I said.

"Well, my viewers making you nervous is the whole point, isn't it? They want you nervous. And you do 'nervous' so well. It's really cute."
That took me by surprise, so I have no control over my blush.
"There! Right there! That's what I want! Try and hold some of that in, okay?"
"I don't think we'll have much problem with that because you seem to bring it out of me." I have to find out!
But she misunderstands. "Don't worry about it. I'm just a person." She thinks I'm talking about her fame.
"Yeah I know that." Plum it all. I'm going to have to be obvious if I'm ever going to find out if this is a date. "It's just I think you're hot."
She blinks in surprise, and that makes me nervous. She's surprised... meaning she didn't think of this as a date. Maybe that's not it.
"I'm really... flattered, especially coming from you." She starts blushing.
I smile. I'm getting somewhere at least. "Why especially me?"
"Well, it's not every day a gay man tells me I'm hot."
      Uh, what?

"I'm not gay." Plum. Maybe I am? No. Because up until two seconds ago, I thought she was hot. Now I'm just upset. Upset that the whole time, she never saw this as a date.
"But... But when you talked about your ex..." She looks like she wants to crawl into a hole. "You said 'him.' Didn't you?"
Somehow, I don't think this collab is going to happen after all. "Yes..." And?

I've never seen a woman drink a glass of wine so fast in my entire life. In some small way, I feel sorry for her. She really stepped in it just now. Put her whole face in it.
Do I seem gay to everyone? I think back to the barista. Yeah, but I was with Darrin in that moment. Or maybe the barista makes a pass at all the guys, maybe everyone, at the gym, hoping that eventually it'll work. I'm not attracted to men in general. Or for that matter, women in general. I'm attracted to attractiveness. It seems logical enough to me.
     "Mike, I'm..."
"Don't worry about it," I interrupt her apology. "That was an easy mistake, I guess. I did say 'him,' after all." Someone else who put me in a box.
"When I first met you, I thought you were cute, and it made me a little nervous. That's why I was such a chatterbox. Then you mentioned your ex was a man, and I thought you were only interested in getting a collab. So I stopped being nervous."

I made her nervous? And she's talking quickly again. Does that mean she's nervous again?
She said I'm cute. I feel a small smile creeping into my features. She's still talking, gone off-topic into a random tangent. I'm going to consider this a good thing.
She takes a breath. "I really just need to stop talking."
I smile. "No, I like the talking." I take a bite of my food.
"It's just I feel ridiculous. I'm such a goof-up sometimes. You should see what I edit out of my videos." She pauses. "So are you considering this a date?"
Finally! "Well, I'd like to." I look down at my plate and up at her a couple of times. Then I sit back with my arms folded, a smile/smirk on my face. Am I hot? This is a new experience for me. She's squirming in her seat.

"Well, I mean, we could... It's just... Wow, if I'd have known, I'd have fixed myself up better than this."
"I already told you you look great."
"Yeah, but..." She blushes. I wish I knew what she was thinking.
"But what?" I smile when her face turns even more red. This is great!
She clears her throat, shakes her head slightly, and says in a stronger tone of voice, "Let's start again. Hi, my name is Ivy Stewart."
I'll play along. Only this time, I'm aware of the effect I have on her. I take her hand--but not in handshake form. "Hello, Ivy. I'm Michael Taylor." My voice has a timbre to it that I know has to be affecting her. I don't give back her hand, instead brushing the fingertips of my other hand across it. "You have very soft hands, Ivy. What do you do for a living?"
After this, the date goes so perfectly that it's like a dream, a fantasy. I guess all I needed was a little confidence.
Finished eating, I pay, and we take a little stroll on the boardwalk, holding hands. She talks; I listen.
     But I want more.

"Such soft hands." I sort of channel some things I've seen Uncle Alex do. He would know what to do here.
     "Mike, you really are romantic."
I smile. "Am I?" I lick between her first two fingers. And bold. Just like when I was drunk at--
Stop it, dammit! I want to be with this woman.
She struggles to speak. "Yes, you are."
     Plum. Go for it.
I pull her hand down and step closer.

I whisper into her ear, "And you're stunning."
     Now.

She doesn't act surprised. She wants it, and I give her some of the best kissing I've ever done. I've had a good teacher. Stop it! I reach down and press her hips into mine, squeezing her ass. I want still more.

She's panting. "We should... do this again... Are you free... Friday?"
Friday? I'm free tonight. I want to invite her back to my place.
She's not a do-it-on-the-first-date kind of girl. I give her a quick kiss. "Yeah." That's fine. I guess I shouldn't really rush into something.
We say our goodnights, and I make sure she gets safely into a cab.
     I'm going to be okay.

I go home and go to bed. I'm not tired at first, so I let my mind wander in fantasies about Ivy. When I'm half-asleep, I hear a pounding at my front door.

     What the...?

Chain Reaction 3.1.14: Work Related, Part Two

     I found a bar.
Okay, so it's always been here, but what I mean is I found a place that doesn't make me think of Darrin.
How do you get over someone? Get under someone else.
This is getting ridiculous. It's been weeks since I last saw him. In the meantime, I've started peeking out my windows, hoping to see a squad car going by, thinking that somehow Darrin got my address. It wouldn't be hard for him to do. He probably already has it, those other times just catching him off guard.
I sigh. New place. With strange lighting.

No one at the bar really interests me, though. All they want to do is complain about their lives, and I don't want to listen to complaints. I'm trying to stay positive!
      Then she walks in.

I know who she is! She's a SimTuber, just like me. Well, she's a hell of a lot more successful than I am. Her name is Ivy Stewart, and she runs a channel named 'Climbing Up the Walls.' I'm a fan.
She's even prettier in real life.

I must be creeping her out because she looks at me and says, "What?"

I smile. "Sorry. I'm not trying to be weird. I recognize you from your channel. I'm a big fan."
She sits back, smiles, and relaxes, eating up my compliment. "Oh. Thanks."
      "My name's Mike."
Her mouth drops. "Oh my maker! You're Mike from 'Ask Mike'!"
I'm floored. "You know me?" You've gotta be kidding! This is great!
      "Yes!" She laughs. "You're hilarious!"
I shrug. "Thanks. I just... be myself. I've always been a geek."

We sit here and talk. She orders a drink. I pay for it. We talk more. She mentions a song I've never heard of, so she plays the video for me on her phone. Then she decides to see if they actually put it in the jukebox in the corner and if not--what songs do they have on it? Eh, it's something else to talk about.

"This is so weird! I had no idea you were from around here."
"Well, uh, I'm actually from across town."
She backs her head up in surprise. "Why would you choose to come to this dump then?"

I look around. "You know, it is a dump. Like a radioactive wasteland with the weird lighting setup."
"Oh my maker, I know. I've thought so many times how I should help them, but then, I figure if they wanted help, they'd ask."
"Maybe they have to have multicolored lights to hide the fact that the food looks terrible. Too bad the lighting doesn't help the taste."
She laughs, and I feel really good. "So why come so far?" she asks again.
Sigh. I guess I'll have to tell her. "It's somewhere I never went with my ex."
"Ah," she says in understanding. "How long were you together?"
I wave my hand downward. "Eh, forget him." I quickly change the subject. "Say, how would you feel about doing a collab with me?" I tense up. I was really hoping to ease into this question.

But she looks totally at ease now. "That would be great, Mike."
      "Great! What should we do?"
"No idea. Not right now anyway. How about we meet for dinner in a few days after we've had a chance to come up with something?"
      Wait... Did she just... ???
I blink. "Yeah! That'd be awesome."
We agree on a time and place, and she explains she has to go.
But I still can't decide whether or not she asked me out. Either way, I'm on cloud nine for the rest of the afternoon. I go home, take a bath, fix myself some healthy dinner, and then I get up to wash the plate.

And then a police car, the kind they give detectives, drives very slowly past my house. I think it really was Darrin. I get a quick rush of adrenaline... and then a huge downhill slide when he drives away.
Damn him! I was having a good day. For once.
     I get out my phone.

Was that you just now?

I couldn't help it. I have to know for sure.
My phone does nothing. I stare at it for probably five whole minutes. Nothing.
     Thirty minutes later...

Yes

Another adrenaline rush. I almost drop my phone because my hands get sweaty.
I'm supposed to work tonight. I make my own schedule, but I usually stick to it. I want to do right with Aunt Em as my boss.
But I can't sit still! I have to get out of here. I need a club with loud, thumping music. Hopefully that will drown out my thoughts... emotions... crazy ideas.

     Damn him

It used to be a great thing when we were friends and even better when we were dating that we think so much alike. Of all the clubs in Eden, he had to pick the same one.

Plum it all. He is such a good dancer. I really should just grab a barstool and sit in a corner, secretly watching him. Instead, he pulls me in like a magnet. Like that overused 'moth to the flame' cliché. I guess the magnet one is just as bad.
This is bad. I want to grab that bun on the back of his head and shove my tongue down his throat.
He sees me, stops dancing for half a beat, smiles, and then goes right back to it.
Okay. So he wants to play games now.

I have a seat at a nearby barstool, a variation of my earlier voyeuristic plan. Turning my head slightly, I see him back up as he dances, and he leans back against the bar, smiling.

"Are you following me, Mike?" He's drunk. Or tipsy at least. I can smell it on him.
"Well aren't you one to talk? At least you admitted that was you earlier."
    "When?"
    "Driving by my house."

He laughs, which makes no sense. I guess it might to someone who's drunk. He scoots, or falls, over, bringing us even closer. "Oh that. Yeah. It's my job." His face is so close to mine. I could easily...

He kisses me. Quickly. On the lips.
Then he smiles, laughs, and goes right back to dancing.

I want to bang my head against the counter. It's not fair! I'm so turned on right now I can't stand it! Why? Why does this have to happen to me?
He only kissed me because he's drunk; I completely get that. But it still happened. It was like how someone might kiss their mom, but it was a kiss. And I'm excited and brokenhearted all at once.
     Damn him!

I watch him, and he comes back. The music gets somewhat quieter.
"Since when do you wear skull and crossbones earrings?" And he's let his beard grow just a little more.
He shrugs. "You're not the only one allowed to change."
I decide he really is so cute when he's drunk. I want to dance with him, but that will definitely push me over the edge.
He likes me watching him, I think. He keeps glancing over at me to check to make sure I still am.
Yes, you as*hole. I still think you're hot, okay? And you're a jerk. You're a gorgeous jerk who can hypnotize me while he dances, and you broke my heart. I get up.

It's not fair. It's not fair! Why does he have to do this to me? I even met someone. I didn't quite get to flirting, but I was working on it. Then he has to plumbing drive by my house while I'm looking out the window. It was like, 'Yoohoo! I'm still here! I still care about you!'
Damn him. I think I've had three of these. Maybe five.
     I wanna dance.

Music pumps into my soul, and Darrin's body moves like a siren sings. Everything is lights and music and Darrin. And me. I'm part of the everything.
I dance like never before, just letting all inhibitions fly away like little birdies in the sunset. I don't need those birdies. I just need Darrin.

I get closer, being reeled in. I'm hooked. And drunk. Yes, I am definitely drunk. I don't care.

My arms wrap around Darrin from behind. He's surprised for half a second, but he quickly catches on that I want to dance. So we dance. My arms hold him, my lips near his neck, my nose turning in to smell his ear. He's just as turned on as I am. I had no idea I could dance like this. Neither did he. And we own this dance floor. It's for us. Just us.
I turn him around, and we face each other. Then I do what I wanted to do and pull back his bun before pouncing and plunging my tongue into his mouth.

Part of my brain knows this is crazy, but I'm not listening. All I want is Darrin. And he's kissing me back. We're dancing and kissing. And moving. And grinding. And I love him.
We've turned around. He starts lightly pushing me back to the wall behind me, and I go willingly. Once there, he kisses me like a man possessed. No more dancing. Just tongues and hands and hips.

I'm dizzy. What the plum did that bartender put in my drinks? 150 proof? I tip to the side. Darrin laughs.
"Don't worry. I'll keep you... up." He laughs again. I don't care. Just kiss me, dammit.
I don't know how long we stay like this. I don't care. But some part of my brain knows that time is passing.
And I'm starting to come around. Darrin and I are sitting on a small sofa. I'm in his arms, and I turn my head and look at him.

     "What just happened, Michael?"
Plumbing reality hits hard. I push up from him, and his arms drop off me. "We got drunk." Plum it all.
I stumble to the bathroom to be sick and to relieve myself. When I walk out, Darrin is gone! I panic for two seconds before I see him by the bar.

"Are you okay?" He reaches out to steady me.
"I'm still a little dizzy." But other than that, I'm great. Darrin loves me. He wants me. It's all going to be okay.
     "Mike!" He lightly shakes me.
     "Hm?"
     "Did you throw up?"
"Yeah, but I rinsed my mouth." I feel his hand on my forehead.
"Maybe you got enough out." It almost sounds like he's talking to himself.
"I'm fine, Darrin." I lean forward and hug him.
"Damn you, Michael," he tells me quietly as his arms wrap around me.
     I laugh. "I've missed you."
He squeezes me to him. "I've missed you too." There's a very happy pause. "But we can't get back together."
Crash! I'd swear I hear shattering glass, but it's all in my imagination. Maybe the bartender dropped something. "What?" I get out of his arms and take a step back. "Then what was all that about?"

"That was... utterly crazy. Just... Damn, Mike. When did you learn to dance?"
"Never mind that. Were you there just now? Or... whenever that just happened? I didn't imagine it. I know I didn't imagine it."
He looks like he's fighting tears. "I know! But like you said, we got drunk. And crazy. We c-can't do this, though. I'm... a police officer. I'm a cop, Mike!" He typically doesn't say the word 'cop.' His hands cover his face, and he swears under his breath.
"So you're saying that was all just a big mistake." My already-broken heart disintegrates into nothing but an empty hole in my chest. I know what he means: he's a cop and I'm a murderer--Therefore we can't get back together. Ever. "You know what, Darrin? I hate you! Plum off!" I stumble out to go hail a cab.
